Deborah Otuno
Medical Humanities alumna, Deborah Otuno '21, reminds us that healthcare is about more than healing, it's about becoming a part of the patients story .
"Medical Humanities taught me the importance of the intersection between faith and medicine— that as a healthcare provider, your role isn’t centralized around the healing of a patient, but rather, your role is to be part of the patient’s story at that particular moment or season in their life. You become a part of the patient’s narrative, which stays with them for life. Learning this lesson during my Medicine and Spirituality class my senior year at Baylor has helped me stand beside patients in their darkest seasons and in their greatest triumphs. It’s guided my words to family members and my interactions with colleagues."
We're proud to see Deborah pursuing a career in medicine and carrying the lessons of Medical Humanities with her every step of the way.
