Degree Requirements

PRE-MAJOR IN MEDICAL HUMANITIES (B.A. Degree)

Students interested in Medical Humanities as a major will choose the Pre-Major in Medical Humanities designation upon enrollment at Baylor. To declare a major in Medical Humanities (B.A. Degree), a student must:

  1. Complete a minimum of 45 semester hours, at least 15 of which are completed at Baylor.
  2. Earn a B or better in MH 1331, Introduction to Medical Humanities*
  3. Earn at least 3.0 cumulative Baylor GPA.
  4. Students must qualify for admission to the major before completing 60 hours in residence (30 hours in residence for transfer students).

*Requirement beginning in the 2022-2023 Undergraduate Catalog

After 45 hours, students who have declared a Pre-Major in Medical Humanities major will be notified via e-mail if they qualified to declare Medical Humanities as a major. For those who qualify, the University Advisement Office will be notified. For those who do not qualify, the student’s major will be changed to Undeclared. 

 

Thirty-three semester hours including the following:

A. Nine (9) hours from three core courses:

     MH 1331: Introduction to Medical Humanities 

     PHI 1309: Introduction to Medical Ethics OR REL 4395 Bioethics

     MH 2301: Christian Spirituality and Health Care                                                

B.  Medical Humanities Distribution Courses (3 semester hours from each of the following distribution lists):         

  1. Philosophy:

    PHI 3301: Moral Philosophy

    PHI 4310: Philosophy of Science

    PHI 4325: Literary and Philosophical Perspectives on Medicine

    PHI 4363: Philosophy of Medicine

  2. Religion and Spirituality:

    MH 3342: Medicine, Missions, and the Gospel

         HED/MH 4305: Theology of Suffering and Healing for Healthcare Professionals

         MH 4361: Meaning, Money, and Medicine

         REL 3345: World Religions

         REL 3390: Christian Ethics

         REL 4395: Bioethics                  

  1. Literature & The Arts:

    *MH 3300: Visual Arts and Healing

         MH 4319: Writing About Sickness and Health

         CW 3302: Poetry of Illness and Imagination

         ENGL 4334: Literature, Medicine and Public Health

         ENGL 4431: Publishing the Literary Magazine

         GTX 3343: Great Texts in the Origins of Science

         GTX 3370: Great Texts in Medicine

         GTX 4341: Great Texts in Modern Science

   4. Historical Perspectives:

        MH/HIS 4300: History of Medicine

        MH 4303: History of Women in Medicine

        CLA 4300: Medicine and Healing in the Ancient World

        HIS 3321: History of Global Epidemics               

  1. Behavioral Health:

         NSC/PSY 4312: Behavioral Medicine

         PSY 3321: Abnormal Psychology

         PSY 3341: A Survey of Human Development

         PSY 3355: Drugs and Behavior

         PSY 3399: Positive Psychology and Well-Being

         PSY 4355: Psychology and Aging                  

  1. Social Sciences and Health:

    MH 4372: End of Life Care & Bereavement

    MH 4382: U.S. Health Care System

    *MH 4391: Disrupting Disparities in Healthcare

    MH 4396: Disability and Society

    SOC 3372: Population Health

    SOC 4353: Sociology of Medicine

*This course fulfills the College of Arts and Sciences Engaged Learning requirement

 

Requirements for a MINOR in Medical Humanities

Beginning with the 2022-2023 Undergraduate Catalog, students wishing to declare the minor in Medical Humanities must first earn a B or better in MH 1331 Introduction to Medical Humanities.

A minimum of 21 semester hours in Medical Humanities

A. Nine (9) hours from three core courses:

         MH 1331: Introduction to Medical Humanities 

         PHI 1309: Introduction to Medical Ethics OR REL 4395 Bioethics

         MH 2301: Christian Spirituality and Health Care

B. Twelve (12) hours comprised of three hours from each of the following four categories:

      1. Literature & The Arts (3 hours)

         *MH 3300: Visual Arts and Healing

         MH 4319: Writing About Sickness and Health

         CW 3302: Poetry of Illness and Imagination

         ENGL 4334: Literature, Medicine and Public Health

         ENGL 4431: Publishing the Literary Magazine

         GTX 3343: Great Texts in the Origins of Science

         GTX 3370: Great Texts in Medicine

         GTX 4341: Great Texts in Modern Science                  

         2. Historical Perspectives (3 hours):

No more than 3 hours from the student's major may be applied to the Medical Humanities Minor

Grade point average--a minimum of "C" (2.00/4.00) in all courses in the minor
