“Wayfaring: A Christian Approach to Mental Health Care” An Evening with Warren Kinghorn, MD, ThD
Access to quality mental health care is deeply needed in the U.S., yet critics often argue that clinicians can reduce people to diagnoses and symptoms. Avoiding this reductionism requires more than scientific knowledge and technical skill—it requires a moral vision of who we are and how we care for one another. In this lecture, we will explore Thomas Aquinas’ Christian understanding of human beings as wayfarers on a journey and consider how this perspective can shape health care practices centered on relationship, storytelling, trust, and love.
Warren Kinghorn is Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine, Esther Colliflower Professor of the Practice of Pastoral and Moral Theology at Duke Divinity School, co-director of the Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative at Duke Divinity School, and a staff psychiatrist at the Durham VA Medical Center. His work centers on ways that Christians engage practices of mental health care, the moral and theological dimensions of combat trauma, and the role of therapeutic relationships in mental health prescribing. He is the author of Wayfaring: A Christian Approach to Mental Health Care (Eerdmans, 2024) and co-author with Abraham Nussbaum of Prescribing Together: A Relational Guide to Psychopharmacology (American Psychiatric Association Publishing, 2021).
