Bridging Disciplines, Expanding Perspectives: Baylor Students Experience Rural Healthcare in Appalachia

Last week, an interdisciplinary team of students and faculty from Baylor's Medical Humanities Department, Robbins College MBA in Healthcare Administration, Louise Herrington School of Nursing, and Honors College programs participated in a rural healthcare immersion trip to Appalachia. The experience provided students with an opportunity to explore the unique challenges and opportunities associated with delivering healthcare in rural communities.

Throughout the trip, students toured healthcare facilities, engaged with physicians and other healthcare professionals through presentations and discussions, and participated in community outreach activities. They also shared presentations of their own, fostering meaningful dialogue and collaboration with local healthcare teams.

By experiencing firsthand the realities of rural healthcare, students gained valuable insight into the social, economic, and geographic factors that influence patient care. The immersion experience reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthened students' understanding of how compassionate, community-centered care can improve health outcomes in underserved areas.
