Lauren A. Barron, MD

Inaugural Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Selma DeBakey and Lois DeBakey Chair for Medical Humanities, Clinical Professor & Director of Medical Humanities Program

Lauren Barron

Dr. Lauren Barron is a 5th generation Houstonian who graduated from Baylor University in the Honors Program with a BA in psychology after which she returned to Houston to attend medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center. She returned to Waco for her residency in Family Medicine at the Family Health Center where she served as chief resident and was invited to join the faculty at the conclusion of her training. She completed a fellowship in Academic Medicine during her 8 years at FHC where she developed special interests in women’s health and palliative care. She then joined a private family practice in Waco where she practiced for 8 years, during which time she was medical director for Hillcrest Community Hospice and taught a course each semester for premed students at Baylor in the Medical Humanities Program. She has now transitioned to Baylor as a professor on a full-time basis, but continues to practice medicine through the Family Health Center in a way that complements her teaching in the classroom.

She is passionate about the innovative Medical Humanities Program at Baylor which is one of the first undergraduate programs of its kind in the United States. She now dedicates most of her time to the professional formation of university students before they enter into medical school and other health professional programs with the belief that they need more than basic science courses to prepare them to be the kind of caregivers we want and need them to be.
